Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Major General (Ret’d) Antony Anderson, Patron of the gala, delivered the keynote address.
In his remarks, he underscored the vital role of diaspora organisations in advancing Jamaica’s development and in strengthening the bonds between the island and its overseas communities.
The Ambassador commended the Foundation for instilling values of discipline, service, and shared responsibility. Since its establishment in 2009, the Foundation has awarded approximately J$40 million (US$256,720) in scholarships.
He emphasised that beyond financial assistance, the Foundation contributes meaningfully to Jamaica’s development by strengthening human capital through education and mentorship, particularly for young men at critical stages of their growth.
Referencing Jamaica’s recovery from Hurricane Melissa, Ambassador Anderson stressed that true resilience requires more than rebuilding infrastructure – it demands strengthening systems, fostering partnerships, and empowering citizens.
He acknowledged the Foundation’s growth from awarding just two scholarships annually to 24 and highlighted its additional support to Munro College and Cornwall College in the aftermath of the hurricane.
Ambassador Anderson further underscored the evolving role of the Jamaican Diaspora, highlighting the importance of remittance-based support alongside structured partnerships that bring expertise, networks, and global standards.
He reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to deepening engagement with diaspora members in support of Jamaica’s national development.
Chairman of the Foundation, Christopher Hunt, reminded attendees that scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence, active extracurricular involvement, and financial need – reflecting David “Wagga” Hunt’s vision of developing well rounded young men.
He further noted that, in addition to local scholarships, the Foundation extends its support to Jamaican students at Howard University through mentorship and transition assistance.
This year, the Foundation also pledged US$10,000 towards Hurricane Melissa recovery efforts.
The Foundation was established in honour of David “Wagga” Hunt, a sports administrator and coach who made significant contributions to Jamaican football and track and field – the Foundation carries forward his legacy of service and youth development.
The gala also paid tribute to late Reggae Ambassador, James “Jimmy Cliff” Chambers.
In her remarks, Justine Henzell reflected on his enduring legacy, noting that through iconic songs such as Many Rivers to Cross, Sitting Here in Limbo, Wonderful World, Beautiful People, and Reggae Night, as well as the landmark film The Harder They Come, Jamaica’s first feature film, which was directed by her late father, Perry Henzell, Jimmy Cliff helped introduce Jamaican music to audiences worldwide.
Principal of Kingston College, Dave Myrie, reflected on the Foundation’s 17 year impact, noting that more than 50 students have benefited from its scholarship programme.
Khaliel Woodhouse, a 2025 Kingston College scholarship recipient, expressed gratitude to the Foundation for providing him with the opportunity to pursue his education.
The gala reaffirmed the Foundation’s enduring commitment to expanding educational opportunities and advancing Jamaica’s long term development through strategic investment in its youth.
