The Full Story
Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, has expressed the hope that the State Visit of President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, will usher in new chapters of cooperation, partnership, and mutual understanding between the two nations for generations to come.
Addressing the State Dinner in honour of President Mahama at King’s House on Tuesday (August 4), the Governor-General noted that the State Visit represents not only an expression of mutual respect and friendship but also a valuable platform for meaningful dialogue and exchange as both nations reaffirm their shared commitment to the advancement and well-being of their peoples.
“It was a valuable opportunity to meet, orientate and strengthen the environment, and explore new avenues for cooperation that will benefit peoples of both countries. Jamaica and Ghana are augmented by a shared history that predates the formal establishment of diplomatic relations in 1968,” he said.
“Our relationship is deeply rooted in our cultural and ancestral roots, which have been referenced by our shared values, interests and pursuits. I [was] very honoured to receive you and your delegation on our shores during this season of national celebration, as Jamaica has observed another year of independence and reflects on the value of freedom, resilience, and nation-building. This State Visit [was] not only an expression of mutual respect and friendship but also a platform for meaningful dialogue and exchanges as we reaffirm our strong commitment to the advancement of our peoples,” the Governor-General stated.
He added that Jamaica values partnerships with countries such as Ghana, particularly given their shared commitment to reparatory justice, resilience, and inclusive governance.
In response, President Mahama thanked Jamaica’s leaders for the warm hospitality and courtesies extended to him during his visit, while acknowledging the deep historical and cultural ties that bind the two nations.
“We celebrate, as family, the shared heritage carried across the oceans, and generations of memories and culture, faith and spirit. We honour the struggles and sacrifices of those who came before us. We recommit ourselves to building a future of greater opportunity, justice and prosperity for our people. We celebrate more than fraternal friendship between two sovereign States. We celebrate a renewed partnership that connects our two countries,” he said.
President Mahama added that Ghana and Jamaica are forever linked by enduring bonds of friendship and the resilience of their peoples, ties that are deeply rooted in their shared African ancestry.
The dinner formed part of President Mahama’s State Visit to Jamaica from August 2 to 5.
