  • Chike-Obi will lead HSBC’s global team of sustainability analysts while remaining based in Hong Kong.
  • HSBC is integrating sustainability coverage into its Macro Strategy pillar to connect ESG themes with macro and asset-class research.

HSBC Global Investment Research has appointed Nneka Chike-Obi as Director, Head of Sustainability, with responsibility for its global team of sustainability analysts.

Chike-Obi will continue to be based in Hong Kong. In her new role, she will lead sustainability research across HSBC’s global investment research platform.

The appointment comes as HSBC integrates sustainability coverage into its Macro Strategy pillar, led by Dr. Murat Ulgen. The structure aims to connect sustainability themes more closely with macroeconomic and asset-class research.

For investors, that integration puts climate, transition and wider sustainability considerations closer to the research used to assess markets and investment opportunities.

Chike-Obi to Lead Global Sustainability Research

Announcing her appointment, Chike-Obi wrote:

“Thrilled to share that I’ve been appointed Director, Head of Sustainability at HSBC Global Investment Research. With clients at the heart of what we do, we’re evolving our sustainability coverage by making it part of our Macro Strategy pillar (led by Dr. Murat Ulgen) to deliver more integrated and actionable insights. I’ll be leading our global team of sustainability analysts, continuing to be based in Hong Kong. I’m excited about strengthening the connection between sustainability themes and our macro and asset class views – so we can help clients make better-informed decisions. Thank you to everyone who’s supported me along the way. I’m looking forward to partnering even more closely across GIR’s three pillars (Equity Research, Macro Strategy and Global Economics) and our integrator businesses (AI/Data Science, Digital Assets and Sustainability).”

Chike-Obi’s remit will span HSBC Global Investment Research’s broader research network. The division operates across three pillars: Equity Research, Macro Strategy and Global Economics.

She will also work across HSBC’s integrator businesses, which include AI and Data Science, Digital Assets and Sustainability.

HSBC Integrates Sustainability With Macro Research

The decision to place sustainability coverage within Macro Strategy gives Chike-Obi a mandate that extends beyond traditional ESG analysis.

Sustainability factors increasingly intersect with the economic variables that shape investment decisions. Climate policy can influence energy prices, industrial investment and international trade. Carbon regulation can affect corporate costs and competitiveness.

At the same time, governments are using subsidies, tax incentives and regulation to direct capital toward strategic industries. Clean energy, critical minerals, manufacturing and infrastructure are increasingly tied to both climate and economic policy.

For institutional investors, these developments can affect valuations and portfolio positioning across multiple asset classes.

HSBC’s approach is designed to bring those connections into a more integrated research framework. Sustainability analysts can contribute directly to assessments of macroeconomic trends and their implications for financial markets.

Sustainability Enters the Investment Mainstream

The appointment comes as investors navigate an increasingly fragmented sustainability landscape.

Climate disclosure requirements and transition policies differ significantly between markets. Companies operating globally must manage those differences while responding to investors, regulators and customers.

At the same time, sustainability analysis is becoming more closely linked with financial risk. Energy security, physical climate exposure, supply-chain resilience and transition investment can all affect corporate performance.

For C-suite executives and investors, the shift creates demand for research that connects sustainability developments with their economic consequences.

Chike-Obi will now lead that work across HSBC’s sustainability research team while strengthening links with its economists, equity analysts and macro strategists.

Her appointment places her at the centre of HSBC’s effort to integrate sustainability into its broader investment analysis. From Hong Kong, she will lead a global team tasked with translating changing climate, policy and sustainability trends into insights for investors operating across markets and asset classes.
